This study was attempted to clearify the mechanism of hypotensive action of Xanthii Fructus, whose scientific name is Xanthium stramarium, L. in rabbits, useing its water extract. The experimental results obtained from this study were as follows: Xanthii Fructs water extract(XFWE), manifested dose-dependent fall in blood pressure. when administered into ear-vein of the rabbit, Accumulation and tachyphylatic phenomena in hypotensive action by XFWE were not appeared in this experiment. Depressor responses by FXWE were not only little influenced by pretreatment of chlorisondamine, guanethidine, phentolamine, diphenhydramine and cyproheptadine, but also by that of bilateral vagotomization, physostigmine and hemicholinium, while on the other hand, markedly weakened by atropine-pretreatment. Above the experimental results suggest that hypotensive action produced by XFWE are due to muscarine-like effect, peripheral colinergic action that is not affected by Cholinesterase.
